Terra Immobile
A ceramic and textile bench for the M+ Museum lounge
Stoneware, glaze, yarn, wood, and casters
Unique piece
The M+ Lounge brings the living experience of Hong Kong visual culture to the museum’s members and patrons. Combining sweeping views of Hong Kong and Kowloon, unique aesthetics, and five-star service, the lounge is designed to be as dynamic as the city itself, with distinctive finishes and furniture by commissioned designers that will change every few years. The inaugural designer is renowned architect, artist, and collector William Lim. Members and patrons can dine, drink, socialise, and relax in custom furnishings that Lim envisioned in part as a sophisticated response to the vernacular aesthetics of classic Hong Kong cha chaan teng eateries.
Throughout the space, visitors encounter selections from a large donation to M+ in 2020 from the Living Collection, established by William and Lavina Lim. A singular compendium of more than ninety artworks that reflect Hong Kong’s rise as global art hub in the 2000s, the donation, a large part of which is presented here, is both a record of a pivotal moment in contemporary culture in Asia and an invitation for visitors to establish their own ongoing engagements with art in everyday life.
>We are delighted to be a part of this project by CL3 with a special commission for a bench. Called Terra immobile, the bench was made in collaboration with Tai Ping.
